1. CUHK and HKUST have announced the application time for 23FALL, marking the official opening of the application season
On September 1, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) announced the application time for 23Fall.In addition to the School of Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) which will open on October 17, all the master’s programs taught by the Faculty of Arts, Science, Engineering, Medicine, Law, Social Sciences and Business School have been opened for application.
Universities in Hong Kong will also announce the application dates for 23FALL. Students who are interested in studying in Hong Kong universities can start to submit their materials.
2. The number of Malaysians studying abroad continues to increase
The number of international students in Malaysia has been increasing in recent years.The number of international new students in Malaysia in the second quarter of 2022 (April-June 2022) increased by 40% compared to the same period last year, according to data recently released by the Malaysian Education Executive Global Services (EMGS).

1. Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II dies at 96
Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch in history, has died aged 96,Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
Her 73-year-old son Prince Charles will become Britain’s new monarch, but he will be known as King Charles III, according to royal officials. Charles’ second wife, Camilla, will be known as the Queen Consort.
“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. ” King Charles said in a statement.
Britain’s Prime Minister Liz Truss, appointed by the queen on Tuesday, said the country was “devastated” and called Elizabeth “the rock on which modern Britain was built”.
2. Barack Obama wins Emmy for narrating national parks series
Barack Obama, the former US president, won an Emmy Award on Sept 3 to go with his two Grammys, and he is halfway to an EGOT.
Obama won the best narrator Emmy for his work on the Netflix documentary series, “Our Great National Parks.”
The five-part show, which features national parks from around the globe, is produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground.
Barack Obama previously won Grammy Awards for his audiobook reading of two of his memoirs, “The Audacity of Hope” and “Dreams from My Father.”
EGOT refers to a special category of entertainers who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony.
To date, 17 people have done it.
3. US reports over 20,000 monkeypox cases
The United States has confirmed more than 20,000 monkeypox cases, according to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
California had the most cases, with 3,833, followed by New York with 3,526 and Florida with 2,126, according to CDC data. So far, the US has the world’s highest tally of monkeypox cases.
The Joe Biden administration has been facing criticism in its response to the monkeypox outbreak, including failure to order enough vaccines, speed treatments and make tests available to head off the outbreak.
“From vaccinations to communications, the White House effort to fight the monkeypox virus has been one mess after another,” said a recent report from Bloomberg.
1.China launches nationwide campaign to boost cybersecurity awarenes
The 2022 China Cybersecurity Week kicked off Monday in Hefei, capital of East China’s Anhui province.
The event, which will last until Sept 11, will consist of both online and offline activities held across the country.
This year’s Cybersecurity Week theme emphasizes that a secure cyberspace environment serves and relies on the people.
More than 60 companies and organizations are participating in a cybersecurity-themed expo covering an area of about 20,000 square meters. Some auto companies have been invited to the expo for the first time to help raise public awareness of vehicle data security through on-site demonstrations.
Nine forums are scheduled during the week, focusing on different topics such as cybersecurity technologies, cybersecurity for teenagers, vehicle data security, artificial intelligence and personal data protection.
China launched its first cybersecurity week in 2014.
2. China’s Shenzhou-14 astronauts complete first extravehicular activities
China’s astronauts Chen Dong and Liu Yang have completed their extravehicular activities (EVAs) and returned to the space station lab module Wentian, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) said on early hours of Friday. The pair returned to the lab module at 0:33 am (Beijing Time) after about six hours of EVAs, according to the CMSA.
This was the first time Chinese astronauts have used Wentian’s airlock cabin, aided by its small mechanical arm, to carry out EVAs, said the CMSA, who has declared Friday’s mission a complete success.
China launched the Shenzhou-14 spaceship on June 5, sending three astronauts to its space station combination for a six-month mission.
3. Stronger foreign trade expected
China’s foreign trade is expected to expand steadily in the coming months, driven by the government’s supportive policies and the resilience of its industrial chain in electromechanical industry, experts said on Wednesday.
Though the growth rate in August was slower compared with July’s 16.6 percent year-on-year growth, due to the high base last year and a weakening in global demand, the experts said, China’s foreign trade will be able to maintain double-digit growth in the second half of the year, and is expected to be a major driver of its economic growth this year.
